January Closet Detox

The holidays are over and it’s time to ring in the New Year with a fresh start, a fresh mind and a fresh wardrobe. No matter how fashion savvy you may be, we all have fashion skeletons and its time to say farewell. Clearing out space in your closet is a cleansing feeling that will also make more space for new purchases this year (in case anyone’s new year’s resolution was to edit their style.) How exciting!

So here are some tips to slimming down your wardrobe and chucking those unwanted clothes in a bag to send off to friends or charity shops:

1. Try on EVERYTHING

Sounds tedious, because it IS tedious, but it must be done. Our bodies, style and trends are constantly changing, and what looked fabulous five years ago may not look so hot now. Make sure your clothes fit right, you like how it looks on you and you feel comfortable. If you aren’t comfortable looking in the mirror at home you aren’t going to feel good in public wearing it, so toss it. And I don’t want to hear the classic excuse: “But what if it comes back in style?” Keep in mind you will shop for the rest of your life, so unless it is a classic item, take your chances and if  it comes back in ten years later, buy it again- in a better color.

2. Don’t do it Alone!

When deciding what to keep, ask a friend to help you out. Women are irrational beings and we need friends to keep us in order and remind us how frumpy that old dress is. A second opinion is a must and tell them to be honest!

3. Make a Profit

Just because your clothes no longer suit you doesn’t mean it’s trash. If you think your clothes are still valuable then why not try selling them on ebay? Not ebay experienced? Ask a friend or look for guidance online. But if you think your clothes are on their last leg then donate to a local charity shop for someone else to enjoy.

4. The Keepers

As someone who adores fashion, I understand that some clothes are akin to old friends- they give you comfort, remind you of happier (maybe skinnier) times, or represent a significant time in your life. These are what I call keepers and will allow you to keep. These are items such as graduation or wedding dresses, a favorite black dress you’ve had for years, or the best pair of shoes you’ve ever owned, nevermind the soles are falling off. If you don’t wear these items often, tuck them away in a box or suitcase and keep them safely under your bed. The idea is to clear your closest to items you wear frequently, so put those puppies somewhere safe where you can easily find them.

5. Make your wardrobe seasonal

This is a classic rule, but hopefully you are all keeping up. Make more room in your closet by rotating your autumn/winter and summer/spring clothes. It makes getting dressed in the morning much easier and clears space! This familiar rule is important!

6. Optional: Fill ‘er up!

Feel better? If you look into your closet and feel empty inside, then it’s time to go shopping for January sales. Enjoy the space.
